Those Eyes Know Everything

Phoebe is an old soul.

I don’t mean that in the “she likes to nap a lot” kind of way. Although, let’s face it, she certainly doesn’t turn down a good nap. I mean there is something behind those beautiful eyes that makes me believe she has been here before. Possibly several times. And I’m pretty sure in at least one of those lives she was a therapist.

Phoebe has never been a lap dog. She has boundaries. She does, however, need to be next to you at all times. There is a difference. If I move from one room to another, Phoebe moves. If I sit down, she settles nearby. Close enough to know exactly what is happening, but far enough away to maintain her independence.

And then there are the conversations.

Somehow Phoebe inserts herself into them like a treasured old friend. She doesn’t interrupt. She doesn’t bark. She just…joins us. She looks from one person to the next, listening so intently that I sometimes forget she has absolutely no idea what we are saying.

Or does she?

Because those eyes. Those beautiful, soulful eyes can look straight through you. Tell Phoebe something and she will stare back as if she understands every single word. Your good days. Your bad days. Your worries. Your secrets. She takes it all in and, thankfully, has never repeated a thing.

She is fiercely protective of the people she loves. Perhaps that’s one of the reasons she and I understand each other so well. We love hard. We protect harder. And we like to keep our people close.

She is our shadow. Our protector. Our confidante. Our treasured friend.
And sometimes, when those beautiful brown eyes lock onto mine, I swear she isn’t looking at me at all. She’s looking right into my soul. And somehow, I think she knows exactly what she sees. ❤️

  3. She does, indeed, look like an old soul who knows all. We’ve been without a fur baby for a while now. We lost our last greyhound to bone cancer when she was only 4 years old, and it broke our hearts. Our vet said we’d know when we’re ready for another, but that hasn’t happened yet. I just count on the neighbors’ dogs for my fur fix.

  10. I’m so very sorry Lynn. ❤️ You will know. Somehow you will. I’m tearing up because the pain is very real. I grew up with a Miniature Schnauzer who lived to be 19. Still miss him all of these years later. When Ernie and I were going through infertility (10 years) we adopted a black lab named Clancy. She lived to be 15. We were devastated. Said no more dogs. That was it. The kids convinced us to try again but it took years to get there. Years.

  17. Phoebe is a beautiful dog and you describe her beautifully. I can see those beautiful, soulful eyes that can look straight through you, like you say. She does have loving eyes and a beautiful grey muzzle

  19. Aye, dogs are quite special, lovely piece, Karen. I’m afraid I don’t have a pet. I could share a photo of something that is very dear to my heart, and knows everything about me. But people aren’t generally interested in Garmin watches 😉

  21. That is a beautiful picture of Phoebe. She obviously knows how to work the camera for maximum benefit. Love the naughty/nice dog collar tag, although she clearly is 100% nice no matter what side is showing. She’s always showing her best side!

  22. Awwww thank you so much. It’s a long story and I may just blog about it later, but my daughter is an expert photographer when it comes to Phoebe. I told her that she really should consider a future in pet photography. lol

  24. What a wonderful tribute to your dog, and I agree that some animals (and people) seem to have “old souls.” I had a cat once who certainly seemed like a wise old man to me. He lived to 21 years old or so. We have a debate over his exact age, but he was old in years and spirit. Your dog, Phoebe, is a blessing.
